Attending: Do you ever get jealous of all the guys looking at your wife?
[Adorable woman in her 80s sits nearby, smiling sweetly]
Mr. Lucky: No. [Pauses] She's a cougar.
[Stunned silence with wide-eyed looks and threatened giggle loop exchanged between the residents & attending]
Mrs. Lucky: It's true, I am a month older than he is, haha.
[Entire room erupts into extended laughter & guffaws]

Old folks rock.
I know, right?!
I secretly enjoy when I administer just a hair more narcotic analgesia than probably needed.
For example:
65yo M, humeral fx with angulation got a total of 250 mcg of fentanyl (after orders) during our 20 minute ride. It became obvious 200 mcg may have been enough when he informed registration he was "single". I replied, "your wife is going to be mad you said that." Him: "The nurses don't need to know that. She's more of a domestic partner anyways."
Love it!
"Are you married?"
"No, but my wife is!"
And speaking of rocking, thanks for leading me to your awesome blogs! I look forward to reading more after I finish studying for a PALS course this weekend.
Thank you, I enjoy your blog as well! Be sure to let me know if there are any topics that could be covered.
And oh boy PALS. We're switching material/videos soon, so hopefully they'll cover the new "science" with you guys.
I hope they'll cover the changes for us, too!
It's ironic that I'm taking a peds life support course when I have spent my internship focusing almost exclusively on adults.
Update -- they covered all of the changes and we used the new quick reference books during the course!
I also had THE BEST INSTRUCTOR EVER (consensus reached by all course takers), making the long drive to the ghetto 100% worthwhile.
Awesome :) Also, I love Coupling! I watched the whole series in a couple of weeks. The only thing kind of like it is Traffic Light- you might like that.
Ooh, I'll have to check out Traffic Light! I'm always on the lookout for awesome funny shows (or I always was before internship hit). Thanks for the tip!
Great "cute old people" moment! :)
Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment! I found your blog and twitter via Michelle Au/scutmonkey.
I had the same conversation with an electrophysiologist the other day! His early pre-med interest in cardiology evolved into a lifelong passion, but he admitted it could have easily gone the other way. So...we'll see ;]
Yep, I admit I expressed interest in my specialty on Day #1 of med school (documented at orientation!) but I eagerly explored other fields to ensure I wasn't missing my true calling.
Remaining open to other fields also helps you to pursue a solid foundation in general medicine during med school and internship. Regardless of your chosen field, you'll nearly always assess and treat your patients in the context of their other health problems in multiple systems.
In the shorter term, broad & deep knowledge of the various fields will allow you to rock your board exams. :-)
