Some of this stuff might even be educational for me if I weren't 1) from the San Francisco Bay Area, 2) in medical school, and 3) old. I can imagine watching some of these episodes with my future teenage daughter, which might understandably strike some as creepy. I think the show could act as a useful discussion tool, which brings us back to item number 3 above.
Yes, there is a decent chance your baby girl (or baby boy) has HPV (that's human papillomavirus) or chlamydia. Say it with me: Ewww. A recent CDC study found a high rate of sexually transmitted infection (HPV, chlamydia, herpes simplex virus type 2, & trichomonas) in teenage females, so it appears some education is in order. The maturing adolescent cervix is more susceptible to HPV & chlamydia infection than that of an older woman, so it's especially important for teenage girls to practice safer sex & limit their partners.
Unfortunately, HPV loves to hang out on the scrotum, so condoms don't offer full protection from HPV infection. The jury is still out on the long-term safety of vaccines that protect against some (but not all!) strains of HPV that cause cervical cancer & genital warts, so abstinence, both male & female, is technically the only way to prevent HPV infection.
Anyway, here's a smattering of what you'll find in this fun little series hosted by a PTA mom who looks like she's still in high school:
"Oral sex is not safe sex...Girls, use dental dams. They can be harder to find so make your own by removing the tip from a condom and cutting it vertically. Everybody likes a crafty girl."
"Once you educate yourself about your body then you can educate your partner about your body"
"Masturbation is the anti-drug."
"I have a really amazing vagina, and I felt selfish not sharing it with the world."
You can watch from the series web site (recommended) or subscribe to the iTunes podcast, too.
